Garage Sale Tips And Tricks

Life tends to build upon itself like a snowball rolling downhill ever accumulating more and more crud  as it progresses. This clutter can take many forms dependent on each individual’s situation in life. Collectibles begin adding up. Baby furniture is stored in the garage or attic. High school clothes are shoved into the back of the closet.

But it doesn’t need to be this way. Garage sales, though time consuming, offer an opportunity to declutter your local space, but more importantly your mind! Psychological studies exist demonstrating how beneficial this mental release is for a person’s health, plus why not make a few bucks while at it too? Here are a few tips and tricks to help create a successful garage sale.

Location is critical

Garage sales aren’t mobile and are typically limited to the driveway or yard available at your property. What do you do if you have  a small space, or worse, no space? Ask family and friends to use their property if its better suited for a garage sale. Consider a multi-family yard sale to increase the inventory and attract larger crowds.

How much time should you allot?

Decide on the number of days you intend to host the garage sale. This can range from a single day event all the way to a three day weekend. As a suggestion, whether choosing a single or multi day event, ensure that this includes Sunday. This particular day tends to have more traffic since people reserve Saturday for special events.

Early birds get the worm…or sale?

It’s a simple fact of nature. When hosting a garage sale, expect many folks to arrive early around 7:15am with a few stragglers rolling through around 3pm. Most of your sales will most likely occur in the morning so it is critical to be ready. Read the next tip describing how to accomplish this.

Preparation is key

Prior to the kick-off day, label each item with a price (see the next tip for suggestions). You don’t need to necessarily setup the night before but stage any tables, chairs, and products needs appropriately for rapid setup in the morning. Consider using colored labels instead of writing each price to make this process smoother. Finally, expect the entire preparation period to take three to four weeks…at a minimum.

Don’t price yourself out of a sale

A good rule of thumb for pricing is the 50 – 30 – 10 rule: new items are marked at 50% of retail, slightly used are marked at 30%, and used items are listed at 10% of retail. Other ideas for pricing include “Buy 1, Get 1 free” deals. This helps remove any potentially unwanted items that most folks probably wouldn’t purchase. What do you do if there are leftover goods anyways?

Help others in need…donate to a charity

The goal of a garage sale is two fold: remove undesirable clutter from your life while making a few bucks on the side. More often than not you’ll have residual items that you probably couldn’t even pay someone to take. What do you do with these products? No, don’t gift them around the holidays. Instead, consider helping the needy and donate leftovers to charitable organizations.
